I am Lydia Gray, the founder/ President of Lydia Amputees Foundation. The journey of my professional life began at Rutgers University in November 1990 as a dishwasher. I later transitioned to a role in security while attending university. During my studies, I returned to dining services, advancing to an office administrator position where I managed payroll and hiring. This role marked the beginning of her administrative career. I then moved to the University of Medicine and Dentistry, part of the same university system, working in logistical services for eight months. I transitioned to auditing, starting as a junior auditor and eventually becoming the office coordinator in the Office of Audit and Advisory Services at Rutgers University. As office coordinator, I attended every audit, liaised with auditors, and ensured the efficient operation of the office. After accumulating over 25 years of service, I contemplated retirement but chose to pursue her entrepreneurial ambitions instead. I started a business producing Chin-Chin, a West African fried pastry snack. Despite my initial success, an accident in March 2020 resulted in the loss of my dominant left hand, a devastating event that deeply affected both my physically and emotionally well-being. The accident and subsequent amputation led me to start the Lydia Amputees Foundation, inspired by the challenges I faced in affording a prosthetic hand. The foundation aims to support amputees and others with disabilities, providing prosthetic devices and encouraging them to ensure that life continues after amputation. Despite my professional success, my passion now lies in raising awareness and helping those facing similar adversities, driven by my personal experience and resilience.
