Bassia Carole – Performer, Storyteller, Cultural Bridge
Bassia Carole is an extraordinary performer and storyteller whose life in music and the arts has spanned continents, genres, and generations. With a career that began in Australia and took her across Japan and the United States, Bassia is a creative force with a deeply lived story that intertwines resilience, reinvention, and artistic expression.
A singer-songwriter at heart, Bassia independently wrote and produced her own album, Mother Earth, and later created and performed her own one-woman show, Bassia Carole presents Candle in the Wind Tomorrow – a powerful tribute to Marilyn Monroe, both now digitally preserved and available on DVD.
Bassia's early music journey saw her performing with iconic Australian artists including Peter Head, Wendy Saddington, and as part of the rock band His Majesty, alongside former Masters Apprentices legends Dennis and Colin Burgess. She later fronted the Latin American outfit Foxx, before launching an international solo career that took her to the heart of Gion, Kyoto, where she held residencies, performed jazz and open-air concerts, and immersed herself in Japan’s vibrant summer festivals.
Her time in Japan wasn’t just about the stage – Bassia became a quiet hero to many young women, helping several in crisis return home safely, even at great personal risk.
In the United States, Bassia’s creative spirit continued to shine. She appeared in a television commercial for Mary Ester Culvert’s Day Spa in New Jersey – a performance that drew attention from Channel TEN. She also became a close support figure for the late Marcus Edward Culvert, celebrated musician and musical director for Al Lee and the Connections.
Later, in Los Angeles, she devoted herself to caregiving and advocacy, helping artist Indaya Smith Jones recover from surgery while coordinating a benefit fundraiser in her honour – all on a voluntary basis.
Back in Australia, Bassia joined the Australian Ladies Variety Committee, continuing her lifelong commitment to community and the performing arts. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, NBC Network executive Russ Stacey described her as “a young Marilyn Monroe” – a nod to her timeless style and captivating stage presence.
Bassia’s signature performance piece is the hauntingly beautiful Japanese song “Ai Sansan,” which she delivered to acclaim at Mancini’s Nightclub in Leichhardt. She’s also been a lead performer at Roman Scandals, backup vocalist at Kinsella’s with Peter Head’s band, and a creative collaborator to many.
Whether singing, mentoring, or simply supporting others to realise their own creative dreams, Bassia Carole brings heart, depth, and elegance to every story she tells.
